This is the last official week of summer though for many of us it seems it ended on the first day of school. But if that's the case then at Alpine Montessori we have officially rebuffed the old thought that with summer goes all the fun. In fact, we are having a wonderful time! New friendships are taking shape, along with new letters, words, numbers, theories... "new" to the little big minds that grace our school every day. This week we got a jump start on tree planting season (we've been counseled that November is the ideal time) and planted a beautiful apricot tree on the playground. There is nothing like planting a tree to help bridge a connection between oneself and the earth and we just couldn't wait to share this experience with the children. The elementary students got their hands dirty as we shoveled, watered, shoveled and watered, pausing every now and then to wave at the onlooking primary students at the window. When all was said and done we stood back and admired what we helped establish. Few in the elementary class will be here long enough to enjoy the shade that this tree will eventually bring to the playground, nor the fruit, but as we so often see here at the Montessori school, it is in the process where lies the reward.
